Artistic Journey
Michael Hern is a Canadian painter who grew up near the beautiful Niagara Region of wineries and Niagara Falls. For the past 14 years however he's been based in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, creating vibrant artworks that reflect his unique experiences and cultural influences of specific locations. He studied fine arts at Fanshawe College in London ON, and Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (N.S.C.A.D.) in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Upon graduating University, he has lived in Wuhan, China, Ulsan and Seoul South Korea and currently Saigon Vietnam since 2012. He has been exhibiting his artwork in Seoul, South Korea's artistically renown areas of Samcheong-dong and Hongdae. He was drawn to towering skyscrapers and their window reflected patterns. Yet since coming to Vietnam, a stark contrast to the commercial world has inspired his paintings, as he has always been inspired by his surroundings. Despite travelling around many parts of the world, it's Vietnam that has really focused his tireless attention. The rustic, historic buildings whose age is displayed on walls, which are soon to be demolished for modern living.
There are other locations from his travels depicted as well, but he is mostly drawn to the neighbourhoods of his present surroundings, never tiring of exploring new areas to influence future paintings. Whether they are the bustle of traffic, or mundane simple frontal scenes of aged neighbourhoods, there is always something here to catch his eye.
